'Data' Concept Art #1

This Blog hasn't been updated in a little while, so I figured I'd drop in and upload something to make me seem like I'm doing something with my summer time... :P

For a little less than 8 years now, I've been creating computer games. None of the work I've published has actually been original concepts because I wanted to get a grasp on learning the fundamentals of using code. But over the past year or so I've been drawing up game characters, mechanics, stage designs and other stuff, and I haven't shared it with anyone. At least, until now. :P

Here is one of the many drawings for a game I'm currently calling "Data" (Pronounced "Dah-Tuh", not "Dae-Tah") That I'll be continuing to work on in the coming years. What you're seeing here is some concept art of the main character, who's been revised 4 times over his development. He used to be something like Kirby, except with a ninja suit and actual hands. :P
(Before anyone says it, yes, his hand is backwards on the bottom one. I noticed just as I inked it :X)

I apologize that some of it is inked and some is not (My ink pen died while inking these!) And If you're wondering what animal he's based on... There is no 1 animal. He has something like the mane of a Lion, whiskers (Were inspired by cats), A Curly tail (Inspired by my Pug), and a long snout (Inspired by Doberman dogs) and long ears (Inspired by Foxes).

Anyway... Give me feedback on this if you want, while I work on my Studio Art project....
(So...why did I post this again? :S )

  1. It reminds me very much of Tails from the Sonic games.

  2. @Leslie Ya, That's the biggest problem I have with his current design. I find it funny that the resemblance wasn't even intentional... Haha

Anyways, I might remove the little hair curls or change them, and maybe do something with the ears... Not sure yet. It's probably going to change again tho, because of the resemblance.

  3. This is tricky to mess with... if you lose/take off too much, you lose the character you are going for, but if you keep enough, it looks too much like a Sonic character.

Personally, I think that the knocked out one looks the least like a Sonic character. What I would suggest based on that is to lose the little side whiskers (if not, alter them a little) and change the eyes. That way you lose a bit of the Sonic component but keep the overall character.

  4. @Leslie In older versions, he had smaller eyes and no whiskers (Instead he had curly hair), The smaller eyes made his head seem really big and made his less expressive, but maybe he'd be better off without the whiskers. I learned how to draw mostly by drawing Sonic, so a lot of my art looks like Sonic characters, and that might be part of the problem too. After thinking about it, shortening his ears would make him seem less expressive. Not sure if that's what I want. :P

  5. I do not think you have to make the eyes smaller, just a different shape or style would help it look less like Sonic, and yes, I can definitely tell you learned how to draw via Sonic. ;)

I think you should leave the ears alone. Maybe post some older sketches so I can compare a little more?

  6. I really think its the eyes and whiskers that make it looks so much like Tails... Have you tried doing whiskers similar to Starfox's? Not as big or defined. I think that the definition in the whiskers is what really adds to the "Sonic-effect".

  7. Leslie and Sam- I love your conversation. For many reasons, but the biggest being that I know little about the way past characters look and so you are really the experts and you are helping and growing in ways that I cannot help you.

I will leave the design to you, but same characters from your video game might be a great way to do the onesie assignment. You could create three onesies with a different character on the front.

  8. @Leslie on "Learning to dra via Sonic" Well, in case it wasn't obvious enough, I figured I'd mention it anyway. XD

What I'll probably do is something similar to StarFox's Whiskers and give him back the curly hair. Check out the latest blog post.

@Ms. Ottum Glad you find this little conversation interesting. Character design can be just as hard as logo design....I basically have to symbolize everything my creation is about into an actual character and make it look visually appealing. Easier said than done. :P

  9. Gamer, also, some awesome Onesies could be "older games" (Either Nintendo 64 type of stuff or even the REALLY old ATARI), "Newer Nintendo" ("Super Mario Galaxy" and such), and "x-Box 360" ("Halo"-DUH, and you would have to put "Left 4 Dead" in there. :D).

Saw the post, responded. Thank you for putting all that up!!

  10. Ooh! Ooh!
You could do all three major game companies: Nintendo, Square Enix ("KINGDOM HEAAAARTS"), and Microsoft!

I do not get to do Onesies, so I may try and pressure you into awesome ideas. ;D

  11. @Leslie Haha, you won't be too surprised by my onesies when I publish them than, since I pretty much planned to do something like that. ;)
